The Fullness of Empty Space
Many years ago, as an art student, I learned to draw what is by drawing what is not. I learned to draw the negative space around the figure.
This perspective opened something in me that has never quite closed.
In my work, I continue to explore the interplay between presence and absence. The canvas becomes a field where the only distinction between the two is where my attention lands. What emerges is not a composition of separate parts, but an unfolding of wholeness. Each mark, and each space between the marks, is essential.
Everything supports everything else.
Over time, this perspective has shaped how I navigate the world. I’ve come to see that nothing stands alone. Each form leans on another, each absence shaped by what surrounds it. What’s not there is just as vital as what is. Together, they reveal a wholeness that doesn’t depend on completion, but on relationship.
