Art of the Still Point

There’s a continuous noise that follows us everywhere.

Not a sound, but a running analysis and commentary on everything we encounter. Our thinking mind explains, labels, judges, and compares, as if life requires a narrator.

Most of us have learned to trust our thinking above everything else. We assume that if we just think harder or longer, the answers will come. Sometimes they do. But the things that matter most, like love, compassion, creative insight, or a sense of rightness, don’t arise from thought.

There’s something underneath the commentary. A deep still point that’s like a steady, open ground.

You can’t find it by thinking your way in. You find it by stopping long enough to notice it’s already here.

In my own painting, I’ve learned that when I step back from analysis and let the brush move from that still point, the image often finds itself.

The still point you are searching for is not lost. It’s only obscured by the searching.
