Art of Presence

Watch what happens when sunlight enters a room through a single window. It falls on the floor, catches the rim of a cup, brightens the spine of a book, rests in the corner of someone's eye. The same light, arriving differently in each place. Nothing has been divided. The window did not ration what it let through.

Attention works this way. The quality of presence you bring to a hard conversation is the same quality that holds a friend's silence or notices the first cold morning of autumn. It does not diminish by being here rather than there. Each moment receives it whole.

This is easy to miss because the moments look so different from each other. We assume that, because there are many surfaces, what reaches them must be parceled out. But light does not travel by subtraction.

In my own work, I find that a single brushstroke can carry everything by being completely itself, not by trying to say more.

Perhaps the question is not how to be more present in more places, but what has been blocking the window all along.
