Art of Looking Inward

Most of us approach self-examination as a kind of detective work. We look inward, tracking our patterns, trying to figure ourselves out. And for a while, that effort is useful.

But something changes when our attention deepens. The looker and the looked-at begin to blur. You turn toward yourself, and the inside opens into the outside. A sound echoes from another room. Light moves across the furniture. Your neighborhood, the weather, another’s face, all arriving as part of who you are.

This isn't confusion. It's actually a more accurate picture because we don't exist apart from the world that forms us moment to moment.

In my painting, I've found that the moment a brushstroke stops being self-conscious is the moment it finally speaks.

You don't get to the bottom of yourself and find something private. The looking and the world it moves through have always been one motion.
