The work of opening the heart is at the root of Zen practice. This opening is inseparable from awareness itself.

It’s an invitation to loosen the carefully constructed image of who you think you are—an opportunity to dismantle the ego’s scaffolding, revealing the raw, flowing nature beneath.

This work requires discernment. The world can be harsh and unforgiving to the open-hearted, which is why care and pacing are essential.

As a Zen teacher and artist, I realize I face the risk of being misunderstood or dismissed, of revealing too much or not enough. However, this very exposure is the gateway to freedom.

Each act of vulnerability becomes a way of meeting life directly.

When the heart opens with wisdom and tenderness, even in the midst of fear, it reveals its unbreakable nature.

Caspar David Friedrich’s Woman at a Window reveals the quiet vulnerability of an open heart. 

A solitary figure gazes outward, her back turned, yet her presence feels exposed, standing at the threshold between inner stillness and the unknown beyond the window. 

The light that enters the room is an invitation to meet life as it is, without defense. 

As in Zen practice, the painting suggests an act of surrender, neither clinging to the self nor resisting what arises. 

In her quiet stance, we sense courage—the kind that comes from allowing the heart to open fully, even in uncertainty.

God speaks to each of us as he makes us, then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are the words we dimly hear:

You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing.
